Refuge Buildings Are Likely To Survive Another Century

The Merciful Love connection July board meeting was unique because the Sisters from Chile were there in person to discuss ongoing projects. When the discussion turned to renovations at the refuge, Sister Mari, the Refuge director, spoke of urgent security requirements that are lacking in the 1927 buildings. Our builders on the board, Bill Lehtinen, Board President and Dennis Lehtinen, Vice President, will locate hardware, locks, and doors that will provide better security. Bill and Dennis who are experienced contractors also described solutions to Sister Mari’s quandary regarding the placement of gas lines and water heaters that are big improvements from the old days when warmth was provided by kerosene heaters. Sister Mari, the director of the Refuge, tells us that she is becoming more confident in her temporary role as Refuge Construction Supervisor. She says that the improvements to the buildings create new beauty that raises the spirits and dignity of the young mothers who seek shelter at the Refuge.

 

Because of Bill’s and Dennis’ efforts and the generous support of donors, the eighty-year-old buildings at the refuge that have withstood storms and earthquakes, have been given another century of life.

 

So much can be accomplished though the efforts of a small group of people and because of donations by many individuals. Sister Yvette moves mountains with her unstinting efforts and her belief that the projects are possible. Our treasurer, Donald, has modernized the accounting system, making sure that monetary transactions between the Refuge and the Merciful Love Connection are transparent and in compliance with all the guidelines for nonprofit groups. The web site is being updated and fundraising efforts are ongoing.

 

Dreams float in the air, the reality will be shelter for four

young mothers who need additional time at the refuge.
