2008-Oct-8: 1927 Historic Building Given New Life

The new apartment (the girls call it “The Suite”) provides a safe and more independent space for four young mothers whose child is over a year old and who have no family network. These young mothers need more time at the Refuge to complete vocational school or high school. They will be able to stay in the apartment until they find a job and are able to take care of themselves and their child. The new apartment frees space in the cottages for four additional young women who need shelter from the streets for themselves and their infants.

 

In addition to the new apartment the remodel included an office for the director, a library, a computer room, and to the delight of the young mothers, space for a “Boutique”. The much needed boutique provides a place for donated clothes that are hung, stacked, folded, clean, and waiting to be used by the mothers who come to the refuge with nothing more than the clothes on their backs.

 

Sister Mari is already putting the new office to good use, coordinating the multiple tasks that involve running a refuge and seeing to the many everyday needs of the young mothers who themselves are children, yet trying courageously to take care of their newborns.

 

The new library beckons with its resources about the outside world, its access to the process of finding information, and its promise of a quiet place to read for those who know how to read, and those who are learning with the help of tutors.

 

The computer room is efficient with upgraded computers and new wiring-- a tangible path to decent jobs.

New wiring throughout the building that replaces the old, unsafe wiring is yet another reason to celebrate.
