2010-July- 12: Friends of the Refuge are a Match for the Mighty Earthquake
When the 8.8 earthquake struck Chile, a thirty-meter section of the outside wall around the Refuge collapsed. Windows were broken and the living quarters received minor damage. The chapel bell tower was hardest hit- a crack appeared in the side of the tower, indicating that the stability and safety of the structure was compromised. We were grateful that no one in the Refuge was harmed and gave heartfelt thanks as friends of the Refuge so quickly and generously sent funds to repair the Refuge wall. The wall is good as new. Thanks to the Conrad Hilton Fund for Sisters and the Lynch foundation, we are also able to begin repairs to the chapel tower. An inspector will assess the damage in August and repairs are planned for September.
P.S. The earthquake came the day after the administration roof was finished. Had the repairs not been complete, the building might have been destroyed
