2011 Mighty Earthquake

On February 27, 2010 an 8.8 earthquake struck Chile. The earthquake came the day after the administration roof was finished. Had the repairs not been complete, the building might have been destroyed.

A thirty-meter section of the outside wall around the Refuge collapsed. Windows were broken and the living quarters received minor damage. The most urgently needed repairs were to the chapel façade; a future earthquake could have brought the street-facing wall toppling into the street. Damage to the bell tower was next priority a crack appeared in the side of the tower, indicating that the stability and safety of the structure was compromised. We were grateful that no one in the Refuge was harmed and gave heartfelt thanks as friends of the Refuge, the Conrad Hilton Fund for Sisters, and the Lynch Foundation,so quickly and generously sent funds to repair the Refuge wall, the chapel and the tower.

The earthquake repairs began on March 7, 2011.   The industrious Refuge maintenance crew headed by Juanito did the needed work on the chapel and the city engineer gave it the final inspection.

Sister Mari told of her pride in the people of Chile who are united in their desire to help each other recover from the damage done to their beautiful country. As she viewed the destruction throughout Chile, she was thankful that more lives were not lost. She spoke with board members, expressing her thanks for the Merciful Love Connection support “especially at a time when the government of Chile is trying so desperately to help those who need help more than we do.”  The Sisters and the young mothers are courageous; their work endures. We feel blessed to be a part it.
