Phase V Renovations - Re-entering the Community
Previous renovations have preserved the future of the Refuge; the sturdy new roof that shelters the young mothers and staff gleams in the sun, ready before the rainy season. A new shiny bathroom is an unheard of luxury for the young mothers who have come from conditions of extreme poverty. The dream of a new roof was a reality in May of 2008. In October, Phase III was also completed: the former dormitory now houses an apartment, storeroom, library, office, and computer room. Because of the new apartment for mothers who need more time at the Refuge, we now have increased capacity in the cottages for four more mothers and their infants who need shelter at the Refuge. Because of the renovations, the young mothers and staff live in safe quarters and are able to go about their work with renewed efficiency, zeal, and hope. Because of the new education facilities, the cycle of poverty is being broken. The young mothers are finding their strength. Phase IV consisted of changing the second dormitory into several classrooms and a recreation room. The classrooms offer places for workshops in cosmetology, and sewing that provide job options. There is also an area dedicated to parenting skills and early child stimulation.
Phase V enlarged the offices of the social worker and psychologist and provided reception rooms for the families of the young mothers. The programs housed in the new offices help the young mothers find ways to overcome the effects of abandonment and abuse.
