The Refuge of Mercy
The Refuge of Mercy is a home for adolescent mothers in Santiago Chile. The Sisters of Most Merciful Love founded this refuge in 1927 to address the unmet needs of adolescent mothers and their babies on the streets of Santiago.
Most of these young women are victims of rape or incest. They are given psychological counseling to cope with the trauma they have experienced. They also receive spiritual guidance, the opportunity to finish grade or high school and to learn personal, mothering, and job skills.
Today about 5 young mothers per month are turned away from the Refuge. The Merciful Love Connection, as a supporting partner of the Refuge of Mercy, sets our goals and objectives and stimulates support one step at a time.
The Sisters believe that if they spend their resources on the mother they will not have to worry about the child. If the mother elects adoption, they work with an adoption program so that she will be psychologically ready to relinquish her parental rights and can meet the adoptive parents.
